The Vornado Model 80X Box Fan is a high velocity 20 inch box fan with variable speed control, a digital display, a timer, a tilting kickstand and a removable grille. For more models, see our Box Fans page.
Our Verdict
This is the most refined box fan on our lists. Variable speed control reaches whisper-quiet levels for sleeping, the timer switches it off for you, and the kickstand aims air where a flat box fan cannot.
It is the most expensive box fan we cover and lists no remote, so it makes most sense in a bedroom or office where you will use the quiet low end every day.

Design
The Model 80X shares the Model 80’s 6 x 20 x 20.15 inch body but weighs 11.55 pounds and comes in a cool gray finish. A built-in kickstand tilts the fan to send air upward, which helps circulate air across a room.
The grille is removable, so cleaning the blades takes minutes, and Vornado backs the fan with replacement for up to 5 years.
Controls
Instead of fixed steps, variable speed control covers everything from a whisper-quiet setting for sleeping to powerful circulation on hot days, and the digital display shows the setting.
A timer turns the fan off on its own, which is handy at bedtime. No remote is listed, so speed changes happen at the fan.
Placement Tips
Stand the fan where it can push air across the room toward where you sit or sleep, rather than into a wall or corner. Keep it on a flat, stable surface, and keep the cord out of walkways.
On cool evenings, a box fan facing into the room from an open window pulls in fresh air, and a second fan facing out of a window on the other side of the house pushes warm air out to create a cross breeze.
Running Costs and Care
Box fans use far less power than an air conditioner, so running one all night costs very little. Pairing it with your AC lets you raise the thermostat a little and stay comfortable.
Unplug the fan and wipe dust from the grilles and blades every few weeks during heavy use, since dust cuts airflow and adds noise. Store it clean and dry over winter, ideally in its box or a bag.
How It Compares
Against the Vornado Model 80, the 80X adds variable speed, a digital display, a timer and the kickstand for a moderate price increase.
Against the JUMXION 10 Inch Box Fan with Timer, the Vornado is a full-size room fan, while the JUMXION is a small personal fan that is cheaper and quieter but moves far less air.
